Overview

Located just off the famous Tarpon Springs sponge docks, "this establishment has permanently closed" was a modest yet cherished spot known for its straightforward charm and hearty meals. Nestled at 459 Athens St, it served as a welcoming retreat for both locals and visitors seeking a genuine breakfast or lunch experience in a laid-back setting.

The menu featured classic comfort foods, with highlights like Eggs Benedict paired with home fries and fresh fruit, alongside a variety of robust sandwiches and wraps. Each sandwich boasted a generous half-pound of meat, ranging from Turkey & Cheese to Italian Hoagies and Chicken Parmesan, often accompanied by crisp pickles and savory potato salad. These offerings showcased a dedication to satisfying, homemade meals that felt both nourishing and straightforward.

The atmosphere, though simple and unpretentious, fostered a warm and friendly environment. Patrons frequently praised the attentive service and the ever-refilled coffee—a small detail that made a big difference in the overall experience. The space welcomed early risers eager to beat the Florida heat, as well as hungry shoppers stopping by after exploring Tarpon Springs’ vibrant sponge docks and neighboring attractions.

Regular visitors often described the staff as kind and humorous, adding a layer of personality that enhanced the dining experience. The presence of New York City memorabilia on the walls provided a hint of character, though it was the quality of food and genuine hospitality that truly set the tone.

While the setting was unassuming and occasionally challenged by practical issues, such as A/C interruptions, this establishment earned its place as a reliable spot for fresh, homemade breakfasts and lunches. It effectively served a diverse crowd—from early morning visitors craving omelets like the Popeye or Monte Cristo to locals looking for a comforting sandwich in familiar surroundings.

Though the doors of "this establishment has permanently closed" may no longer open, its legacy remains through the memories of flavorful meals and warm encounters. For those who discovered it, it was not just a restaurant—it was a part of the Tarpon Springs community fabric.

Great place just off the main Tarpon Springs sponge docks. Friendly owner and server, coffee was never empty, and the food was delicious! Awesome place for breakfast or lunch before you hit all the shopping and sightseeing. Recommended!

Nice place, food was pretty good. Unfortunately A/C was having issues. But it was a pleasure eating there. Some NYC memorabilia on the walls. I recommend.

Arrived early to the village to beat the heat and the crowds...everything was closed and we were hungry for breakfast! A neighboring cafe pointed out the Empire. Very plain, no decor, but who cares??? Delicious breakfast of mushroom, sausage and provolone omelet, very nicely done potatoes and fresh fruit. Coffee cup never empty. For less than $17.00. We were very pleased. Thank you Empire Cafe.

Stumbled upon this place this morning and were glad we did--fresh food and friendly service. I had the Popeye omelet, my wife had the Monte Cristo omelet, and both were delicious! Plus it was a beautiful morning to sit outside. We'll be back!

Andrea and Moe hosted and provided an awesome breakfast experience for us this morning. The coffee was delicious and kept coming. Pancakes and the Eggs Benedict was the best I had. Moe fixes everything from scratch and the menu items are seasonal. Our new favorite family owned restaurant. Ritchie and Leslie
